Is Career Training Right For You? Take The Free Quiz |
It takes a lot of commitment and grit to successfully change careers, regardless of how old you are, but a new career after 60? One of our recent graduates, Susan Vasilinda, started the MT/HDS course at the age of 60. Today, she is successfully employed with one of the top MT/HDS employers in the industry. In our interview, Susan shared her story of starting a new career after 60, her struggles and her job search experience.
Well, I come from a medical background. I originally trained as a Medical Office Assistant back in 1980, when we were still using typewriters with white-out ribbons. I enjoyed many, many years in the industry!
When we relocated to a new town, I decided to try something different. Since I wanted to have the freedom to work flexible hours, I looked particularly into online careers.
I’ve always been doing a lot of commuting to and from work in the past, and it added extra two hours to my day. It was very tiring!
The idea that you could actually train and work from home was very appealing to me, so I decided to look particularly into online careers. Working from home as a Medical Transcriptionist seemed like a perfect fit for me because it allows you to work when you want.
At first, I was a bit unsure about the MT/HDS career. You see, I am 61, and there were lots of other students who were much younger than me. I thought that it would be difficult to learn because when you are getting older, you don’t retain things quite the same and you don’t have the same amount of energy.
But I just made up my mind, I made the decision, and I did it! I’ve successfully graduated from college, and I have started my new career recently. I am so happy I did it! My family and friends are really proud of me too.
It was a big undertaking, but it was well worth it.
My favourite part was being able to study and work from home. It was great! This course allowed me a lot of flexibility. I do have lots of commitments, so even when I needed to get into my car and go somewhere in the middle of the day, I could do that! Online education makes everything very available to you!

Probably the hardest part for me was the voice recognition piece because I struggle with hearing impairment. I managed to persevere with the support of instructors, and I overcame that by getting a little piece of equipment that helped me to hear the computer better.
At one point I was even contacted by one of the instructors because this other student was having the same hearing problem. The instructor asked me to talk to the student to encourage her and give her some advice. I really hope that the outcome was good!
My job search process was quite short. After I graduated, CanScribe gave me a list of employers that were hiring. I applied for only two positions, and after passing the entrance test, I got an offer from M*Modal.
Well, I do confess, I took a bit of a break after graduating because it was right around Christmas.
My job search process was quite short. After I graduated, CanScribe gave me a list of employers that were hiring. I applied for only two positions, and after passing the entrance test, I got an offer from M*Modal.
Right now, I am in the process of doing their training. Even though we worked with the Fluency Platform in the course, M*Modal still wants me to complete 500 minutes of transcription for practice before I can start my job.
Yes, definitely. This course is worth taking. It is very comprehensive! I know other women who said they’ve taken transcription courses that were shorter than the CanScribe Course, but when they went into the industry they were not very prepared.
CanScribe’s Course is different. It gives you lots and lots of exposure, and they make you do it, so you are prepared for the industry. Also, It’s good to have that training in fluency, for sure.
Also, the instructors and the rest of the team here are wonderfully supportive! They helped me to get through the course and start my new career as an MT/HDS.
This course is a big jump; it requires a lot of effort and commitment. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to start a successful career as a Medical Transcriptionist. CanScribe’s Course gives you lots and lots of exposure, and they make you do it, so you are prepared for the industry.
