Chapter 1: Introduction

The student will be introduced to the transcription field and learn how the profession has evolved and advanced to current day.

Chapter 2: Program Orientation

The student will learn how the learning management system works and how to navigate and use built-in features. Instruction will be provided on use of the foot pedal, headset, and transcription platform. The student will be introduced to different learning styles, including tips on how to study and be successful with test taking. The student will also learn how to use Stedman’s Online.

Chapter 3: Computer fundamentals

In this chapter the student will become familiar with basic computer skills, including the use of hardware, software, peripherals, and wireless technology; use of the internet as a resource; and use of various methods for data storage and networking.

Chapter 4: Microsoft Outlook

This chapter teaches the student how to use the features in Microsoft Outlook 2013/2016, and how to use ribbons, quick access toolbar, and navigation pane. The student learns how to address, compose, read, reply, forward, and format email messages.

Chapter 5: Microsoft Word

The purpose of this chapter is to teach the student available features in Microsoft Word 2013/2016 such as copy and paste, find and replace, and how to format documents. Students will learn how to use Word features to produce a professionally edited document.

Chapter 6: Microsoft Excel

This chapter is an introduction to Microsoft Excel 2013/2016. The student will learn about an electronic spreadsheet, the Excel program, what it can do, identify elements within the program, and understand basic terminology.

Chapter 7: Keyboarding Techniques

The purpose of this chapter is to familiarize the student with correct ergonomic setup and placement of the hands on the keyboard. The student will complete exercises to increase their keyboarding skill and speed, as well as an introduction to transcription.

Chapter 8: Grammar and Style

This chapter is a refresher of English grammar and punctuation rules. The student will be able to recognize and identify proper usage of English grammar and correctly punctuate sentences. The student will understand the difference between formal and medical grammar and style and why these differences are important in medical documentation.

Chapter 9: Medical Report Formatting

The purpose of this chapter is to educate the student on how to format medical records. Specifically, the chapter will cover report types, report components, formatting rules, and using resources effectively. The student will become familiar with specific topics that are included in different sections of reports.

Chapter 10: Body as a Whole

This chapter introduces medical terms by teaching the student word parts (combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes). The student will then be able to break down words to define terms and will begin transcribing simple medical sentences.

Chapter 11: Pharmacology

The student will be exposed to general pharmacology fundamentals, including development, administration, and schedules, and will learn the basics of drug nomenclature. The student will also be able to define the classification and function of different drug types and will learn how to effectively research medication names. The student will be able to properly format medication references in a patient record.

Chapter 12: EMDAT Launch

Chapter 13: Speech Recognition

The student will be introduced to speech recognition technology and the role in the health information management industry. The student will learn common myths associated with the emergence of SRT, the history of SRT, and how SRT works. The student will have a working understanding of the speech recognition engine and how medical transcription/healthcare documentation specialists and medical editors fit into SRT. Speech Recognition will be worked on from this point on in the program. The student will use an outside medical transcription/healthcare documentation platform to complete report editing for this chapter.

Chapter 14: Skeletal System

The student will learn the structure and function of the skeletal system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat skeletal disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the skeletal system.

Chapter 15: Muscular System

The student will learn the structure and function of the muscular system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat muscular disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the muscular system.

Chapter 16: Lymphatic System, Immunology, and Allergy

The student will learn the structure and function of the lymphatic system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat endocrine disease, immune diseases and allergies. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the lymphatic system.

Chapter 17: Endocrine System

The student will learn the structure and function of the endocrine system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat endocrine disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the endocrine system.

Chapter 18: Sensory System

The student will learn the structure and function of the sensory system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat sensory disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the sensory system.

Chapter 19: Preparing for Proficiency Improvement Examination– 1 (PIE-1)

The purpose of this chapter is to provide exam information, including an overview of the exam, tips for preparing, and accessing the final examination. The student will work with an instructor, who will provide feedback in preparation for the exam.

Chapter 20: Proficiency Improvement Examination - 1 (PIE-1)

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an opportunity for self-assessment after completion of the first part of the program.

The student will learn the structure and function of the integumentary system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat integumentary disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the integumentary system.

Chapter 23: Cardiovascular System

The student will learn the structure and function of the cardiovascular system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat cardiovascular disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the cardiovascular system.

Chapter 24: Respiratory System

The student will learn the structure and function of the respiratory system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat respiratory disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the respiratory system.

Chapter 25: Gastrointestinal System

The student will learn the structure and function of the reproductive system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat reproductive disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the reproductive system.

Chapter 26: Genitourinary System

The student will learn the structure and function of the genitourinary system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat genitourinary disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the genitourinary system.

Chapter 27: Reproductive System

The student will learn the structure and function of the reproductive system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat reproductive disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the reproductive system.

Chapter 28: Nervous System

The student will learn the structure and function of the nervous system as well as common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat nervous disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the nervous system.

Chapter 29: Psychiatry

The student will learn the common diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat psychiatric disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to psychiatry. Students will use an outside medical transcription/healthcare documentation platform to complete report editing for this chapter.

Chapter 30: Oncology

The student will learn common causes, diseases, disorders, treatment modalities, and medications used to treat malignant disease. Common procedures and laboratory tests will be discussed. The student will learn combining forms and abbreviations pertaining to the oncology system.

Chapter 31: Surgical Documentation A & B

The student will learn the medical and surgical equipment names for all body systems and use these to create operative reports in this advanced unit. The student will become familiar with terms used in operative reports and the course of events when a patient is taken to the operating room for a procedure.

Chapter 32: Advanced A, B, & C

This chapter places the emphasis on dictations only. Students will find the dictations in these sets to be more challenging and contain more advanced terminology than those in previous chapters. These dictations will help prepare students for some of the more difficult dictations encountered in the working environment. Upon completion of this chapter, the student will be familiar with a variety challenging and acute care dictations. Section A is 46 hours, Section B is 46 hours, and Section C is 49 hours.

Chapter 33: Professional Issues

The student will learn the ethics and procedures that should be followed as a medical transcription/healthcare documentation specialist. The student will also discover the differences between an onsite employee and an independent contractor. Confidentiality and security issues will be discussed. Human resource materials will be covered to help the student understand how to present and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Chapter 34: Career Development A & B

The student will obtain a basic knowledge of the electronic health record (EHR), understand the 8 core functions of the EHR, learn the advantages and issues surrounding implementation, and acquire an understanding of HIPAA and PIPEDA.

Chapter 35: Electronic Health Records (EHR)

This chapter introduces medical terms by teaching the student word parts (combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes). The student will then be able to break down words to define terms and will begin transcribing simple medical sentences.

Chapter 36: Preparing for Proficiency Improvement Examination-2 (PIE-2)

This chapter introduces medical terms by teaching the student word parts (combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes). The student will then be able to break down words to define terms and will begin transcribing simple medical sentences.

Chapter 37: Proficiency Improvement Examination-2 (PIE-2)

The purpose of this chapter is to provide exam information, including an overview of the exam, tips for preparing for the exam, and accessing the final examination. The student will work with an instructor, who will provide feedback in preparation for the exam.

Chapter 38: Practicum Preparation/Fluency Platform Launch

This session is intended to prepare the student for the practicum. Once students have received the initial practicum instructions from Student Services, they will be contacted by their practicum supervisor (mentor) via email. They will receive a request for an interview and will be provided information to attend an orientation session, based on the platform they will be using for the practicum (EMDAT or Fluency). Upon completion of the interview, the student will need to download the platform software, and attend an instructor-led orientation session. After completion of the orientation the supervisor sends the student an email containing their platform access information, as well as necessary documentation such as account specifics, user guides, interview tips, orientation summary, practicum chat instructions, and practicum instructions. The student will then begin transcribing in their respective platform. This pertains to CanScribe practicum students only.

Chapter 39: Practicum (Practical Work Experience)

This session is intended to help the student transition from the educational world into the “real” world of a working medical transcription/healthcare documentation specialist. The student will have the opportunity to participate in an interview process and are assigned a supervisor for the entire Practicum.

Chapter 40: Preparing for Proficiency Improvement Examination-3 (PIE-3)

Upon completion of this chapter, the student will be better prepared to sit the exam.

Chapter 41: Proficiency Improvement Examination – 3 (PIE-3)

Medical Transcription / Healthcare Documentation is part of the healthcare industry that renders and edits doctor dictated reports, procedures, and notes in an electronic format in order to create files representing the treatment history of patients.

How much can I earn as a Medical Transcription / Healthcare Documentation Specialist?

Most onsite positions are based on either an hourly rate or annual salary. An onsite entry level MT/HDS can expect to receive anywhere from $12 – $19 an hour.

Most at-home positions are based on productivity. Depending upon how you choose to work and how productive you are, you can augment the family income by a few hundred dollars a month or earn more than $40,000 per year – and your earning potential should increase with every year you work.

How much practice transcription is included in the course?

There are over 35 hours of authentic doctor dictated reports for you to transcribe. These include over 1000 reports from a huge cross-section of medical specialties covering all work types. As you progress in your studies and gain further knowledge and skills, the reports increase in difficulty.

How long does it take to complete the course?

As per AHDI guidelines, a program should be 1 year in length, just as ours is. The course takes approximately 1176 hours to complete. The average completion time is 12 months. This can be accomplished by studying a minimum of 22 hours a week.

However, you can work at your own pace and complete the course in a faster timeline, especially if you have previous medical experience. We have had a few students complete the course in 4 – 5 months, but the average is 9 – 12 months. After completion of the course, you will become fully qualified to work as a professional medical transcription/healthcare documentation specialist.

How are exams administered?

The MT/HDS course consists of 3 “PIE” exams. All three exams provide the student with the opportunity to self-assess at specific intervals of the program.

All the exams and tests are open book, so you have full access to the course, reference materials and all of your online resources during the exam.

Each exam consists of two components, a theory portion, and a dictation section.

What equipment do I need?

If you take the course on campus, everything is provided.

If you take the course as distance learning, you will need a computer and Internet access. You must have a computer with speakers, an available USB port, and Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word and Excel) loaded onto your computer.

We also recommend that you have high-speed Internet. This is not a requirement to take the course, but if you are interested in working from home, all employers require high-speed Internet.

I am already familiar with some of the subjects taught in the program, can I skip them?

The CanScribe Medical Transcription / Healthcare Documentation training program is competency based — meaning you move on to the next level when you are competent in the material being taught.

Many of our students have previous experience in several of the concepts taught in the program. Although you cannot skip any chapters in the course, you are able to challenge any unit tests and exercises. Exercises in the course can be attempted multiple times. Tests may only be taken once.

What employer will I do my practicum with? Can I choose the company?

Students can take a practicum with an employer of their choosing or they can do the practicum through CanScribe. Many graduates have gained employment immediately out of their local practicum experience. To get their own practicum, they should try asking local hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, labs, insurance agencies, etc. The local practicum site will need to provide them with on the job training, have someone supervise them and be willing to assess progress. Whether they take their own local practicum or one through CanScribe, we will help set up the practicum and manage it on their behalf.

The practicum is to be considered their first job in their new career and is to be treated as such. The practicum is 100 hours of unpaid, on-the-job work experience transcribing real patient files. Students are to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week in order to participate in the practicum.

Practicums are assigned according to PIE 2 exam results. Any student who achieves over 95% on all reports may qualify for an external practicum. Any student who does not pass PIE 2 is assigned the CanScribe practicum.

What is the Refund Policy for the MT/HDS Course?

1. If the institution receives tuition from the student, or a person on behalf of the student, the institution will refund the student, or the person who paid on behalf of the student, the tuition that was paid in relation to the program in which the student is enrolled if:
a. the institution receives a notice of withdrawal from the student no later than seven days after the effective contract date and before the contract start date;
b. the student, or the student’s parent or legal guardian, signs the student enrolment contract seven days or less before the contract start date and the institution receives a notice of withdrawal from the student between the date the student, or the student’s parent or legal guardian, signed the student enrolment contract and the contract start date; or
c. the student does not attend a work experience component and the institution does not provide all of the hours of instruction of the work experience component within 30 days of the contract end date.

2. The institution will refund the tuition for the program and all related fees paid by the student or a person on behalf of the student enrolled in the program if the student is enrolled in the program without having met the admission requirements and did not misrepresent his or her knowledge or skills when applying for admission.

3. If a student does not attend any of the first 30% of the hours of instruction to be provided during the contract term, the institution may retain up to 50% of the tuition paid under the student enrolment contract unless the program is provided solely through distance education.

4. Unless the program is provided solely through distance education, if the institution receives a notice of withdrawal from a student: a. more than seven days after the effective contract date and
i. at least 30 days before the contract start date, the institution may retain up to 10% of the tuition due under
the student enrolment contract, to a maximum of $1,000.
ii. less than 30 days before the contract start date, the institution may retain up to 20% of the tuition due under
the student enrolment contract, to a maximum of $1,300.
b. after the contract start date
i. but before 10% of the hours of instruction to be provided during the contract term have been provided, the institution may retain up to 30% of the tuition due under the student enrolment contract.
ii. and after 10% but before 30% of the hours of instruction to be provided during the contract term have been
provided, the institution may retain up to 50% of the tuition due under the student enrolment contract.

5. Unless the program is provided solely through distance education, if the institution provides a notice of dismissal to a student and the date the institution delivers the notice to the student is:
a. before 10% of the hours of instruction to be provided during the contract term have been provided, the institution may retain up to 30% of the tuition due under the student enrolment contract.
b. after 10% but before 30% of the hours of instruction to be provided during the contract term have been provided, the institution may retain up to 50% of the tuition due under the student enrolment contract.
6. If the institution provides the program solely through distance education and the institution receives a student’s notice of withdrawal or the institution delivers a notice of dismissal to the student and:
a. the student has completed and received an evaluation of his or her performance for at least 30% of the hours of instruction to be provided during the contract term, the institution may retain up to 30% of the tuition due under the student enrolment contract, or
b. the student has completed and received an evaluation of his or her performance for more than 30% but less than 50% of the program, the institution may retain up to 50% of the tuition due under the student enrolment contract.

7. The institution will refund fees charged for course materials paid for but not received if the student provides a notice of withdrawal to the institution or the institution provides a notice of dismissal to the student.

8. Refunds required under this policy will be paid to the student, or a person who paid the tuition or fees on behalf of the student, within 30 days:
a. of the date the institution receives a student’s notice of withdrawal,
b. of the date the institution provides a notice of dismissal to the student,
c. of the date that the registrar provides notice to the institution that the institution is not complying with section 1(c)
or 2 of this policy, or
d. after the first 30% of the hours of instruction if section 3 of this policy applies.
9. If an international student delivers a copy of a refusal of a study permit to the institution, sections 1(a), 1(b), 4, 7, and 8 of this policy apply as if the copy of the refusal were a notice of withdrawal, unless:
a. the international student requests an additional letter of acceptance for the same program that was the subject of the refusal of a study permit, or
b. The program is provided solely through distance education.

Is your computer a Windows PC?

A Windows PC is required for this course as it is the standard in the MT/HDS workforce. Windows Vista or earlier is not supported.

Internet Speed

It is recommended that you have high speed internet access. This means you have a download speed of 15 megabits per second and an upload speed of 5 megabits per second.

The supplies included with your MT/HDS course, is a foot pedal and a headset.  Both of these items connect to your PC through USB. We recommend that you have a minimum of 4 USB ports accessible on your PC. If your PC does not contain the minimum suggestion of 4 USB ports, we recommend purchasing a USB Hub at your local computer supply store, to allow access for all your devices.
