Healthcare Documentation Refresher


This course is particularly for those who have:

previously completed a course but have limited work exposure in the industry

been out of the workforce for an extended period of time

 had limited or no exposure to acute care and/or speech recognition technology

Grade 12 diploma or mature student (19 at start of course)

 Copy of diploma if under 19

 Graduation from an MT/HDS program, or previous HDS experience

 Ability to pass basic grammar test – 85%

All applicants must be qualified to sit for the Healthcare Documentation Refresher course pre-entrance exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, students may choose from the various payment options below and begin working towards your MT/HDS Graduation Certificate.


Pre Entrance Exam:

Note: you will receive a $250 credit towards the HDS Refresher course upon successful completion of the entry exam. If you are unsuccessful in the entry exam you will receive a $250 credit upon enrolling in the regular HDS course.

$250 for the exam, $1500 down and then 2 payments of $550(includes a $100 processing fee) for a total of $2850.00

What is the job market for a Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation Specialist?

There is currently a huge demand for CanScribe MT/HDS graduates. With international services hiring and an aging population, there is no end in sight for the continuing need for CanScribe graduates. Employment of MTs is projected to grow even faster than the average over the next few years.

How much can I earn as a Medical Transcription / Healthcare Documentation Specialist?

Most onsite positions are based on either an hourly rate or annual salary. An onsite entry level MT/HDS can expect to receive anywhere from $12 – $19 an hour.

Most at-home positions are based on productivity. Depending upon how you choose to work and how productive you are, you can augment the family income by a few hundred dollars a month or earn more than $40,000 per year – and your earning potential should increase with every year you work.

This productivity chart will give you an idea of what you can expect to make from performing traditional medical transcription/healthcare documentation – translating oral dictation. This is figured at a rate of 10 cents per line. The dollar figure is the Gross Annual Income.

How much practice transcription is included in the course?

There are over 450 authentic doctor dictated reports for you to transcribe. These include reports from a huge cross-section of medical specialties covering all work types. As you progress in your studies and gain further knowledge and skills, the reports increase in difficulty.

How long does it take to complete the course?

The course takes approximately 400 hours to complete. You will get an access to the course for full 4 months.

You can work at your own pace and complete the course in a faster timeline, especially if you have previous medical experience.

After completion of the course, you will become fully qualified to work as a professional medical transcription/healthcare documentation specialist.

What equipment do I need?

If you take the course on campus, everything is provided.

If you take the course as distance learning, you will need a computer and Internet access. You must have a computer with speakers, an available USB port, and Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word and Excel) loaded onto your computer.

We also recommend that you have high-speed Internet. This is not a requirement to take the course, but if you are interested in working from home, all employers require high-speed Internet.

The supplies included with your MT/HDS course is a foot pedal and a headset.  Both of these items connect to your PC through USB. We recommend that you have a minimum of 4 USB ports accessible on your PC. If your PC does not contain the minimum suggestion of 4 USB ports, we recommend purchasing a USB Hub at your local computer supply store, to allow access for all your devices.
